Ligue 1 giants Marseille announce the sacking of head coach Gennaro Gattuso after just 24 games in charge of Les Olympiens, who are ninth in the Ligue 1 table.

Marseille have announced the sacking of head coach Gennaro Gattuso after just 24 matches in charge.

The former AC Milan, Valencia and Napoli manager took over from Marcelino at the Orange Velodrome at the end of September but has only masterminded nine wins over the past five months.

A 1-0 loss to Brest in Sunday's Ligue 1 showdown left Marseille ninth in the table, dropping down six places since Marcelino's tenure abruptly finished with Les Olympiens inside the Champions League spots.

Marseille are now nine points adrift of the top four, as well as having a six-point gap to make up to Lens in the Europa Conference League spot, and Gattuso - whose contract only ran until the summer - has now been relieved of his duties as expected.

A short statement from the Ligue 1 giants read: "Olympique de Marseille announces the end of its collaboration with Gennaro Gattuso.

"Olympique de Marseille would like to extend its special thanks to Gennaro and his entire staff for the unfailing commitment and professionalism they have shown on a daily basis, and wishes them all the best for the future."

Former Ivory Coast manager Jean-Louis Gasset - who was sacked by the Elephants during the Africa Cup of Nations - is expected to take charge of Marseille for the remainder of the season, and the 70-year-old's first game in charge will likely be Thursday's Europa League playoff second leg with Shakhtar Donetsk, whom Les Olympiens drew 2-2 with last week.
