Roma could reportedly move for Jan Vertonghen this summer as the Italian giants continue to struggle to agree a deal for Manchester United's Chris Smalling.
Vertonghen is available on a free transfer ahead of the 2020-21 campaign, having seen his contract with Tottenham Hotspur expire.
Smalling has been in impressive form on loan at Roma this term, and the Serie A outfit have said on a number of occasions that they are keen to sign the Englishman on a permanent deal.
The two clubs are allegedly struggling to agree a fee, though, and according to Corriere dello Sport, Paulo Fonseca's side are now weighing up alternatives.
The report claims that Vertonghen has been identified as a potential arrival, with the Belgium international thought to be keen on a move to Serie A.
Roma will finish their league season against Juventus on Saturday night before switching their attention to the Europa League, where they will face Sevilla on August 6.
