Manchester United's opening bid for Alex Telles reportedly did not even get a response from Porto as the Portuguese club deemed it so far below their asking price.
United are keen to bolster their defensive line ahead of Monday's transfer deadline, with Telles now their top target after missing out on Sergio Reguilon to Tottenham Hotspur.
Past reports have suggested that personal terms have already been agreed, but O Jogo claims that the two clubs remain significantly apart on a fee for the full-back.
United are thought to have submitted an offer of around £12m, only to be met with silence from Porto as they did not deem the bid worthy of a response.
The Portuguese outfit want around £18m for the 27-year-old - a fee that United are reluctant to pay for a player now in the final year of his contract.
In addition to Telles, United are still in the market for a new right-winger before the deadline, with Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho still their number one target.
