Manchester United allegedly put themselves in a position to edge out Liverpool in the race to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

Manchester United have reportedly emerged as the new frontrunners to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

With just a year remaining on his contract, the Spaniard is said to be keen on accepting a new challenge elsewhere during the next transfer window.

Throughout this month, Liverpool have been regarded as the favourites for the former Barcelona man, who may be available for a fee in the region of £30m.

However, according to Sport, United have moved into pole position for the 29-year-old's signature.

Although Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is well stocked for options in the centre of the pitch, the Norwegian may jump at the opportunity to sign the playmaker for a cut-price fee.

At a time when they are thought to be prioritising a winger, much could depend on whether United are able to secure qualification for next season's Champions League.
