Manchester United are reportedly fighting Barcelona for the signing of Bayer Leverkusen star Jonathan Tah, who is approaching the end of his current contract in Germany.

Manchester United have reportedly joined Barcelona in pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah.

The 28-year-old was linked to Barca last month, with the Spanish club also said to be targeting Bayern Munich and Canada full-back Alphonso Davies.

Tah was a stalwart for Bayer Leverkusen during a historic campaign under Xabi Alonso in 2023-24, in which the German side lifted the Bundesliga crown as invincibles.

During a term which also included DFB Pokal glory and an appearance in the final of the Europa League, the centre-back featured on 48 occasions, scoring six goals.

Since making the domestic switch from Hamburger SV to Bayer Leverkusen during the summer of 2015, Tah has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga.

Man United, Barcelona to battle for Tah in summer?

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, two European powerhouses are set to battle it out for the services of Tah at the end of the current campaign.

The report states that Premier League giants Manchester United and La Liga stars Real Madrid are interested in securing the signature of the 28-year-old.

With his current deal at the BayArena expiring at the conclusion of the 2024-25 season, Tah will be free to discuss a pre-contract agreement with non-German clubs as early as January.

The defender's agent recently claimed that the centre-back would be leaving Leverkusen at the end of the term, opening the door to a high-profile switch across the continent.

Following November's international break, Tah will be back in Bundesliga action for his club side as they host Conference League-contending Heidenheim on November 23.

Man United love the Bundesliga market

With the Old Trafford futures of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans uncertain, it is no surprise to see that Man United are targeting centre-back reinforcements.

Additionally, incoming head coach Ruben Amorim prefers to use a back-three system, meaning that the Red Devils will require a greater stock of defensive options.

Part of Bayer Leverkusen's unbeaten squad and an elite Germany team on the international scene, Tah would represent a major coup for Man United.

The Red Devils have recent history of signing defenders from the Bundesliga, with Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt joining from Bayern Munich over the summer.
