Edinson Cavani will reportedly stay at Manchester United on deadline day after talks over a late switch to Barcelona broke down.

Edinson Cavani will reportedly stay at Manchester United beyond today's 11pm transfer deadline after talks over a late move to Barcelona broke down.

Speculation arose on deadline day that the Uruguayan could leave Old Trafford in the wake of Cristiano Ronaldo's arrival, with reports suggesting that Cavani had been offered to the Spanish giants.

Any exit would have freed up the number seven shirt for Ronaldo at Man United, but transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims that the deal is now dead in the water.

Barcelona currently find themselves in a perilous financial state and have only been able to bring in players on free transfers this summer, while also losing club legend Lionel Messi as they could not afford to renew his contract.

Cavani was understood to be open to the idea of joining the Catalan outfit due to the prospect of less playing time following Ronaldo's return to Man United.

However, the 34-year-old, who scored 17 goals in 39 appearances during his first season at Old Trafford last term, will now stay at the club until at least January.

Cavani signed a one-year extension to his Man United deal earlier this summer, but that now expires next year.
