Barcelona lead the race to sign Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood during next summer's transfer window, according to a report.

Barcelona are reportedly leading the race to sign Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood during next summer's transfer window.

The 22-year-old is currently on loan at Getafe, and he has impressed for the Spanish outfit this season, scoring five goals and registering four assists in 15 appearances in all competitions.

Getafe are believed to have told Man United that they are prepared to pay £40m to sign the forward next year, but the La Liga side face huge competition for his signature.

A recent report claimed that both Barcelona and Real Madrid are interested in the Red Devils academy product, who has a contract at Old Trafford until June 2025.

According to The Sun, Barcelona are now at the head of the queue, with the Catalan outfit sending scouts to Getafe's last three matches to watch him in action.

The report claims that the La Liga champions are 'determined' to secure his signature, and Greenwood is prepared to make the move to Spain on a permanent basis next year.

There have recently been suggestions that there could be a route for Greenwood back into the first-team set-up at Old Trafford, but he is still highly unlikely to play for the club again.

In January 2022, following accusations from a woman, the forward was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault, and he was then further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill.

Greenwood was also facing charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, but there is no longer a case against him, with all charges being dropped, which allowed him to resume his career this season.

The Englishman was expected to be reintroduced into the first team at Old Trafford for the 2023-24 campaign, with the club thought to have made the decision to bring him back.

However, there was a change of heart when the public opinion was gauged, which led to Man United making the decision to send him on loan for the current season.

Greenwood has contributed three goals and four assists in 14 La Liga appearances for Getafe this term, in addition to two goals in his first appearance in the Copa del Rey.

Before his arrest, he was regarded as one of the best young talents in world football, scoring 35 goals and registering 12 assists in his first 129 appearances for Man United.

However, Greenwood's time at Old Trafford is set to come to an end on a permanent basis during next summer's transfer window.
