Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez's agent has claimed that his client "was very close" to joining Manchester United last summer as their new number one.

After deciding against handing David de Gea a new contract, Man United entered the goalkeeping market and ultimately settled on Andre Onana as their new first-choice stopper, with the Cameroonian linking up with Red Devils head coach Erik ten Hag for the second time in his career.

According to Gonzalo Goni, a deal was almost in place for Martinez to join the 20-time English champions, but Ten Hag stepped in to secure a move for Onana.

"Last year he [Martinez] was very close to Manchester United, [but] the coach chose Onana, because he already knew him," Goni told ESPN Futbol 12.

A decision on the future of Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino will not be made until this summer's European Championship has concluded, according to the 28-year-old's father Angel Merino.

The midfielder scored a last-gasp winner for Spain on Friday evening to send La Roja into the semi-finals of Euro 2024 at Germany's expense.

There is currently a host of speculation surrounding Merino's future, with Barcelona believed to be keen to secure his services during this summer's transfer window.

Merino's current deal with Real Sociedad is due to expire next summer, and new Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick is thought to view him as the ideal player to boost the midfield for the 2024-25 campaign.

FC Basel have confirmed that 20-year-old prodigy Renato Veiga is in talks to join another club amid claims that Chelsea are closing in on his signing

The 20-year-old learned his trade in the Sporting Lisbon youth ranks but failed to make a senior appearance for the Portuguese giants, who loaned him out to Augsburg in the Bundesliga in the second half of the 2022-23 season.

Veiga earned plentiful minutes in the German top flight and was eventually sold to Basel in a £3.9m deal, and he has gone from strength to strength since his move to Switzerland.

The Portuguese youngster scored two goals and set up one more in 26 matches during the 2023-24 campaign, where his versatility came to the fore as he featured in a multitude of positions.

Nunez and Mourinho? Liverpool 'respond' to shock transfer claims

Liverpool have reportedly come to a decision over the future of Darwin Nunez amid shock claims that Jose Mourinho wants to work with the South American at Fenerbahce.

The former Benfica striker has proven himself as a consistent goal contributor since arriving at Anfield in the summer of 2022, in a deal that could eventually see him become the Reds' most expensive player.

Nunez has had a direct hand in 50 strikes from 96 matches in a Liverpool shirt - 33 of his own and 17 assists - conjuring up 18 goals and 13 assists from 54 matches in the 2023-24 campaign.

However, the 25-year-old is often ridiculed for his wastefulness in front of goal and sparked serious speculation over his future a couple of months ago, memorably deleting nearly all Liverpool-related posts from his Instagram page.

Gunning for Gordon: Liverpool 'to try again' for £80m winger

Liverpool have reportedly not yet given up hope of bringing Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon to Anfield and are planning a second bid for the winger.

While the ex-Everton starlet plays a bit-part role for England at Euro 2024, Liverpool are believed to be pushing hard to bring him back to Merseyside after his rise to prominence with Eddie Howe's side.

Gordon was responsible for 12 goals and 11 assists in 48 appearances across all competitions in the 2023-24 campaign, including 11 goals and 10 assists in 35 Premier League contests, form which earned him a spot in England's Euros squad.

Despite his Everton connections, Liverpool are intent on reuniting with their former academy product, who started out in the Reds system before being released at the age of 11, prior to his Goodison Park arrival.

Slot snubbed: Liverpool beaten to £15.2m signing despite 'pleasing' talks

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has been dealt yet another early transfer blow at Anfield, as the Reds have missed out on a deal for one of their reported goalkeeping targets.

While there is surely no danger of Alisson Becker leaving this summer, despite reports of interest from Saudi Arabia, he could start the 2024-25 season without both of his former deputies.

Erstwhile third choice Adrian was offered a new contract, but talks with the Spanish veteran failed to yield a positive solution, and he ultimately left as a free agent at the end of his deal.

Caoimhin Kelleher remains on the books on Merseyside, but the Republic of Ireland international is now itching for regular first-team football after a few years as Alisson's backup.

West Ham United are reportedly considering making a move for Villarreal forward Alexander Sorloth during this summer's transfer window.

The Norway international was in excellent form for the Yellow Submarine during the 2023-24 campaign, scoring 26 goals and registering six assists in 41 appearances in all competitions.

Sorloth has a contract with Villarreal until the summer of 2028, but there is currently speculation surrounding his future.

According to AS, West Ham have expressed an interest in signing the 28-year-old during this summer's transfer window, with Roma also allegedly keen.

Summer deal? Man United, Liverpool 'handed' major boost in Chiesa race

Juventus forward Federico Chiesa on September 23, 2023
    © Reuters

Juventus are reportedly willing to sell Federico Chiesa for a cut-price €25m (£21.2m) fee this summer, with Manchester United and Liverpool both said to be keen on his services.

The 26-year-old was in action for Italy at Euro 2024, making four appearances at the competition, but he was unable to help his country progress past the last-16 stage of the tournament.

Chiesa's future at club level has recently been the subject of much speculation, as his contract with the Old Lady is due to expire at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

According to Tuttosport, Juventus have signalled that they are prepared to let the attacker leave for €25m (£21.2m), although the deal could potentially rise to €30m (£25.4m) once bonuses have been included.

Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag has reportedly played a major role in convincing Bologna's Joshua Zirkzee to make the move to Old Trafford during this summer's transfer window.

The Red Devils are believed to have identified Zirkzee as their number one centre-forward target, with the club looking to bring in competition for Rasmus Hojlund for the 2024-25 campaign.

Zirkzee has a €40m (£33.9m) release clause in his current contract, which Man United have allegedly decided to activate.

Arsenal and AC Milan have also been linked with the Dutchman, who appears to have played his final match for Bologna, with the Italian outfit expecting to lose him this summer.

"Juve, Barca" - Romano names clubs keen on Man United attacker

Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes celebrates scoring their second goal with Casemiro, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford on May 28, 2023
    © Reuters

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has said that Juventus "appreciate" Jadon Sancho, but a possible deal for the Manchester United attacker this summer is not close to completion.

Sancho spent the second half of the 2023-24 campaign on loan at Borussia Dortmund after the breakdown of his relationship with Man United head coach Erik ten Hag.

Dortmund have thus far been unable to negotiate a permanent return for the Englishman, though, and as it stands, he will be back with Man United on Monday for the start of pre-season training.

Sancho is unlikely to have a future at Old Trafford, with the 20-time English champions believed to be attempting to sell him during the summer market.

Arsenal striker Mika Biereth is reportedly on the verge of sealing a permanent exit from the North London giants, who have agreed a £4m deal with Sturm Graz.

The 21-year-old was loaned out to the Austrian side for the second half of the 2023-24 campaign, having excelled at Motherwell with six goals and five assists in 14 Premiership matches in the first half of the campaign.

Biereth continued to go from strength to strength with Sturm Graz, contributing nine goals and four assists from 22 games as Die Schwoazn unexpectedly dethroned Red Bull Salzburg as Austrian Bundesliga champions.

Biereth ended the campaign with a league and cup double to his name and also shone in continental action in the Europa Conference League, coming up with three goals in four knockout matches.

Transfer news and rumours: Idah to Celtic, Cash to Milan, Reid to Leicester

    © Reuters

Scottish Premiership champions Celtic have reportedly failed with an opening bid for Norwich City striker Adam Idah.

The 23-year-old spent the second half of the 2023-24 season on loan with Brendan Rodgers's side and made a massive impact with nine goals and two assists from 19 games in all competitions.

Idah struck seven goals in just 10 Premiership appearances before the Top Six/Bottom Six split, and the Bhoys are determined to convert his loan into a permanent stay.

However, BBC Sport claims that Celtic have already been knocked back by Norwich, who have turned down an opening proposal between £4m and £5m from their Scottish counterparts.

Liverpool 'make' major decision over Salah future

Liverpool have seemingly ruled out the possibility of cashing in on Mohamed Salah during the summer transfer window.

The Merseyside giants spent a number of months earlier this year deliberating over who would replace Jurgen Klopp as manager, the decision being taken to appoint Feyenoord's Arne Slot.

With other behind-the-scenes roles needing filled, it has taken away from the need to hold extensive discussions with several of their key players.

Virgil van Dijk and Salah both have 12 months remaining on their respective contracts, effectively putting Liverpool in a position where they need to assess their options.

Reunited: Lopetegui brings Wolves man to West Ham

West Ham United have announced that they have completed the signing of Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Max Kilman.

Soon after it was confirmed that Julen Lopetegui would replace David Moyes in the Hammers dugout, speculation emerged that the Spaniard was prioritising a reunion with a player who he briefly worked with at Molineux.

Aside from one game, Kilman would complete 90 minutes in all of the other 22 Premier League fixtures that Lopetegui would oversee with the West Midlands outfit.

At one stage, it appeared that Wolves' £40m valuation of the 27-year-old would lead to West Ham turning their attention elsewhere, particularly when one of the bids made stood at £25m.

Manchester United have reportedly given permission for one of their players to hold discussions with Saudi Pro League clubs.

With the Red Devils having assembled their desired team behind the scenes, a plan is now underway to put together a squad capable of challenging for at least a top-four place in the Premier League table.

If reports are to be believed, Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt could soon be reuniting with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford after their previous time together at Ajax.

Fellow Dutchman Joshua Zirkzee may follow his compatriot to the Theatre of Dreams in due course as United attempt to find competition for Rasmus Hojlund.
