Ed Woodward "working tirelessly" to support Jose Mourinho

Ed Woodward vows to meet the expectations of Jose Mourinho and Manchester United's supporters in future transfer windows.

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has insisted that "everyone at the club is working tirelessly" to give Jose Mourinho the support he needs.

The Portuguese has cut a frustrated figure in recent weeks after missing out on a number of his top transfer targets in the summer, namely a new central defender.

Mourinho is understood to have missed out on the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire, Yerry Mina and Diego Godin, though he did strengthen in central midfield and at right-back.

An underwhelming start to the campaign has led to further suggestions of a rocky relationship between the ex-Chelsea manager and his bosses, but Woodward has promised to meet expectations in future transfer windows.

"Everyone at the club is working tirelessly to add to Manchester United's 66 and Jose's 25 trophies," he said in a statement. "That is what our passionate fans and our history demands.

"We are committed to our philosophy of blending top academy graduates with world-class players and are proud that, once again, last season we had more academy graduate minutes on the pitch than any other Premier League club.

"Our increased revenue expectation for the year demonstrates our continued strong long-term financial performance which underpins everything we do and allows us to compete for top talent in an increasingly competitive transfer market."

United's latest financial accounts show a record revenue of £590m for the fourth quarter.
