Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has said that recent signing David de Gea has a great future ahead of him.
The 20-year-old keeper has been highly criticised so far this season, having conceded three goals in three games, despite keeping a clean sheet against Tottenham in his home debut.
Speaking to Five Live Sport, Schmeichel supported the Spaniard and said that he is only going to get better.
"He's very unfairly, in my opinion, been criticised, even before he played his first game," he said. "I thought he showed tremendous character in the game against Tottenham the other day. He wasn't fazed by being at Old Trafford.
"He's only young and it takes a little bit of time to adjust to the kind of football we play in the Premier League, the kind of players you play against and the kind of referees we have, who allow a lot more physical contact.
"He needs to learn and I think he has a great future ahead of him."
De Gea spent just one full season as the first-choice goalkeeper at Atletico Madrid before signing at Old Trafford this summer.
