Report: Manchester United open door for Paul Scholes return

Paul Scholes could reportedly take on the job as Manchester United's reserve-team boss, but the Red Devils are unlikely to actively pursue him for the position.

Manchester United are open to bringing former player Paul Scholes back to Old Trafford to manage the club's Under-23s side, according to a report.

The Red Devils are on the lookout for a new permanent successor for Warren Joyce, who departed to take on the Wigan Athletic job last week.

Scholes made over 700 appearances for United before hanging up his boots in 2013, but he has been one of the most vocal critics of the Premier League giants in recent years.

It is claimed by the Daily Mail that United chiefs are willing to speak to the 41-year-old should he declare his intention to apply for the position, but they will not actively pursue him at this stage.

Nicky Butt, another member of United's famed 'Class of 92', is in temporary charge of the second string and will help with the search, which will need to be signed off by executive vice chairman Ed Woodward.
