Paul Scholes hopes Ryan Giggs will stay at Manchester United

Paul Scholes is hopeful that Ryan Giggs will stay at Manchester United if Jose Mourinho is appointed as manager.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has said that he hopes Ryan Giggs will stay at the club in some capacity.

The Welshman's future at Old Trafford looks uncertain following Louis van Gaal's departure as manager on Monday.

Giggs was the Dutchman's assistant coach for the past two seasons, having already been David Moyes's right-hand man during a 10-month spell following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement.

Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is believed to be on the verge of becoming United's new manager, but it is likely that the Portuguese will want long-term associate Rui Faria as his assistant coach.

It has been reported that United are keen to keep Giggs at the club, and Scholes is also pushing for his ex-teammate to remain at Old Trafford.

"I've not spoken to him for a few days but hopefully he will still be involved," Scholes told talkSPORT. "He's got great experience, he knows the club inside out.

"I think everybody involved with the club and the fans especially would love him to be involved in some way - whether it is assistant or just helping him [Mourinho] being around the place.

"He has been there for nearly 30 years now, he knows the players, he knows what type of football is expected and hopefully he can be of assistance somehow."

Giggs won 34 trophies during his playing career at United.
