Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic insists that his side can challenge for the Premier League title following their 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has insisted that his side can challenge for the Premier League title this season if they continue to perform as they did against Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon.

Jose Mourinho's side closed the gap on leaders Manchester City to just two points courtesy of a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford, with Anthony Martial coming off the bench to score the only goal of the game with nine minutes remaining.

Both sides struggled to create chances for much of the match until it began to open up in the final 20 minutes, but Matic stressed that coming away with the right result is the most important thing.

"It was important for us. We were playing against one of the best teams in the league, thanks to [Martial] we managed to score and win this game," he told Sky Sports News.

"Congratulations to the opponents, they were very good today. The fans enjoyed it and now we've got three points. They had more of the ball in the first half but we had more chances than them.

"They play great football but it's the result that matters in the end. If we continue like this we can challenge for the title. It's important to keep our record at home. The fans were great for 90 minutes. I hope we continue like this as these games are so important."

United have now won all five of their home Premier League games this season without conceding a goal.
