Manchester United will only have to pay £1.7m to release leading managerial target Erik ten Hag from his Ajax contract, according to a report.

Manchester United will reportedly only have to pay £1.7m to release Erik ten Hag from his Ajax contract.

Ten Hag recently underwent an interview with the 20-time English champions, and it is understood that he has emerged as the club's number one managerial target, moving ahead of Paris Saint-Germain's Mauricio Pochettino.

Man United will allegedly hold a final round of interviews over the role but are widely expected to offer the Dutchman the opportunity to become their new head coach on a long-term contract.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the release clause in Ajax's Ten Hag contract is just £1.7m, which is significantly less than the buy-out fee in Pochettino's PSG deal.

The 52-year-old called Man United "a great club with great fans" when asked about a possible move to Old Trafford over the next couple of months.

Ten Hag has won two league titles and two KNVB Cups since arriving at Ajax in 2017, and his side are currently two points clear of PSV Eindhoven at the top of the Eredivisie table.

Ralf Rangnick will lead Man United for the remainder of the season on an interim basis, with the club bidding to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League table.
