Jonny Evans: 'Wayne Rooney will prove people wrong'

West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans says that former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney will prove people wrong after under-performing this season.

West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans has insisted that former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney will be unconcerned about the recent criticism he has received regarding his performances.

A number of below-par displays have resulted in calls for Rooney to be dropped from United's starting lineup, but Evans, who played with the England captain during his time in the North-West, predicts that Rooney will relish the chance to "prove people wrong".

The 27-year-old told the Express & Star: "Wayne Rooney is such a good player, on his day he's one of the best in the world.

"It's funny, little things like that happen, little spells, and people automatically try and write people off but Wayne Rooney's a fighter. I'm sure he'll relish this opportunity to prove people wrong.

"He'll just brush it off. I'm sure he'll take a few things on board and he'll try to put it right but he's had a career under the microscope and it's not always an easy place to be."

Evans will line up against Rooney when the Baggies travel to Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
