Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick believes that Tom Cleverley can be a vital player for the club as long as he keeps delivering at the highest standard.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has called for teammate Tom Cleverley to consistently meet the club's high standards.

The 23-year-old, who competed for Team GB at the London Olympic Games this summer, has had a mismatched few seasons with the Red Devils due to a number of injury setbacks.

"He's got the talent and the ability, we've all seen that," BBC Sport quotes Carrick as saying. "He's comfortable dealing with the pressures that come with playing for the club.

"It's just about keeping the standards high. We set the standards and the hard part is keeping to that standard consistently.

"There is no magic ingredient. It's just about learning and getting experience. The more games he plays the better he'll play."

Meanwhile, Sir Alex Ferguson's side are preparing to take on newly-promoted side Southampton at St Mary's on Sunday.
