Former Manchester United striker Eric Cantona announces his intention to run for French president this year.

Former Manchester United striker Eric Cantona has announced that he wants to run for the presidency in this year's French elections.

Cantona would need the backing of 500 political officials by the end of February in order to allow him to run for President.

The former Leeds United player said: "This engagement obliges me to speak, more earnestly than usual, but also with a keen sense of my responsibility."

Cantona, who scored 82 times during a five-year spell between 1992 and 1997 at Old Trafford, has also represented Leeds, Marseille and Auxerre during his career.

The Frenchman also netted on 20 occasions for the national side in 45 international matches.
