Andre Villas-Boas says Chelsea are still contenders

Andre Villas-Boas insists that Chelsea are still contenders for the Premier League title.

Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas believes that The Blues are still contenders for the Premier League title, despite trailing leaders Manchester United by five points.

United beat Chelsea 3-1 yesterday (Sunday) to extended their lead at the top of the table and move two points clear of second-place local rivals Manchester City.

Despite United’s 100% start to the season and their dominance at the top, Villas-Boas insists that it is still early days.

"They are in a good position now but it is very, very early," Villas-Boas said. "Nothing that would happen here will mean anything in the Premier League table, and today, not that I want to overemphasise it, you had Man City going to Fulham and Fulham getting a point."

"Arsenal lost and Liverpool lost, so all five contenders are there and anything can happen," he added. "The most regular has been United but we showed we are up to the levels of the champions - it is just this time this game didn't go our way but we will be up there competing for the title and I am glad Sir Alex corroborates in this opinion."

Chelsea will look to put the defeat behind them when they take on Swansea City at home on Saturday, September 24.
