Alex Ferguson says that losing key players to the Olympic Games is "ridiculous".

Alex Ferguson has hit out at the notion of Wayne Rooney featuring in Great Britain's Olympic football plans.

The England striker is one of 12 Manchester United players in contention for a place at London 2012, an idea the Red Devils boss condemned as "ridiculous".

He said: "It's ridiculous, it is utter chaos. There are so many complications.

"I have no idea how badly other clubs are affected but I would imagine Tottenham will have a few like Gareth Bale. Aston Villa have a lot of younger players as well - that is all Alex McLeish needs."

Rooney is understood to be on Team GB coach Stuart Pearce's shortlist of 80 players eligible for Olympic selection.

However, Ferguson insists that he was given assurance that members of his squad going to this summer's Euro 2012 will not be picked for the London event.

"We have agreed that any player who boards the plane to the European Championship in Poland and Ukraine will not be considered for selection to Team GB," He added.

"It's a sensible football decision when you consider the demands on players, and it leaves no room for doubt for players and their clubs about next summer and the two major tournaments."

Wales manager Chris Coleman previously expressed concerns that Britain's Olympics plans could disrupt his side's World Cup qualifying bid.
