John O'Shea hails "amazing" occasion

John O'Shea is glad that Sunderland's fans managed to witness an "amazing" League Cup win over Manchester United.

Sunderland captain John O'Shea has admitted that it was "amazing" to knock out his former side Manchester United in the League Cup semi-final on Wednesday night.

The Black Cats went through on penalties following a 2-1 win for United over 120 minutes, and O'Shea said that it was a great feeling when Vito Mannone saved the final penalty.

"Hopefully there will be one or two more nights like this, for the fans to witness that occasion was amazing," he told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle. "You can imagine the emotions we had, but for those that travelled down, they must have floated back to the North-East.

"We thought that was it; it was done when Phil Bardsley scored, it was so emotionally draining after Untied scored that second goal with 10 seconds to go, but the courage the boys showed was amazing.

"The manager spoke to us before the penalties and he said 'believe, where you put the ball and Vito will save a couple' and when Vito saved the last penalty, we were jumping around everywhere and it was incredible stuff."

In the Premier League, Sunderland are currently 19th.
