Jose Mourinho believes that Bristol City were "a bit lucky" after they claimed a 2-1 win over Manchester United in their EFL Cup quarter-final meeting at Ashton Gate.

Jose Mourinho has described Bristol City as being "a bit lucky" in claiming a 2-1 win over Manchester United in their EFL Cup quarter-final meeting at Ashton Gate.

Korey Smith's injury-time strike knocked the holders out of the competition and booked the Robins' first League Cup last-four spot since the 1988-89 campaign.

The tie looked set to go to extra time after a Zlatan Ibrahimovic goal just before the hour cancelled out Joe Bryan's 51st-minute opener, only for the Championship side to come up trumps at the death.

"They were a bit lucky but they fought a lot to be lucky," Mourinho told reporters. "Everyone was waiting for our goal so they were lucky. We hit the post twice.

"But they played brilliantly, they fought like it was the game of their lives which probably it was. A beautiful day for football. A team from the lower division won. A big day for them.

"In the first half we lacked the intensity that they had. Physically and mentally. It was one more day in the office for my players, a day that some of them didn't even want to come to he office."

Bristol City join Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City in the semi-finals of the competition.
