Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw says that the Red Devils cannot afford to "let the occasion take over" against Newcastle United in the EFL Cup final.

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has said that the Red Devils cannot afford to "let the occasion take over" in Sunday's EFL Cup final with Newcastle United.

The 20-time English champions will be bidding to win their first trophy for six years when they tackle Premier League rivals Newcastle in this weekend's showpiece event at Wembley.

There is pressure on Man United to end their trophy drought, with Erik ten Hag looking to land his first piece of silverware since arriving as head coach last summer.

Shaw has won three trophies since arriving at Old Trafford - the Community Shield, the Europa League and the League Cup - and the 27-year-old has called for calm ahead of the clash with Eddie Howe's side.

"We've all been in a lot of big games. I think we have that experience, and we can't, of course, let the occasion take over," Shaw told MUTV.

"Like I say, we have to just focus on the game itself, the things we've been doing well and take them into the game and just make sure we focus on our game.

"[We] know what Newcastle are going to bring and the occasion is going to be amazing, but once you're out on that pitch and the whistle goes, you forget about that, and you just play the game.

"We need the belief to be there. We need to believe that we can win this game.

"(We have to) Go out there with confidence and I think for me, I won't need to speak too much because everyone knows how important this game is, this match will be.

"We need to leave everything out on that pitch to win the game because it's been a long time since we've won a final. For me, for the players, for the club it means everything. We will do everything we can to make sure that we win that."

Man United are currently competing on front fronts, having booked their spot in the last-16 stage of the Europa League by recording a 2-1 victory over Barcelona on Thursday night.

The Red Devils will take on West Ham United in the fifth round of the FA Cup next week, while they are third in the Premier League table, just five points behind leaders Arsenal.

Shaw has been in strong form for Ten Hag's side this season, making 30 appearances in all competitions, contributing one goal and three assists, while he has featured on two occasions in the EFL Cup in 2022-23.
