Wayne Rooney: 'Sir Bobby Charlton would want Man Utd player to have England record'

Wayne Rooney insists that Sir Bobby Charlton would like to see his all-time England goalscoring record kept in the hands of a Manchester United player.

Wayne Rooney has suggested that Sir Bobby Charlton would not mind seeing his all-time England goalscoring record broken by a fellow Manchester United stalwart.

The Three Lions skipper is on the verge of breaking Charlton's record as he is poised on 48 goals, just one strike behind the England legend, ahead of his side's clash against San Marino.

He told reporters: "I think if someone has to break Sir Bobby's England record, he'd want it to be someone who has played for United for a long time.

"With the experience he had as a player, being at United for so long, he's always in the dressing room after games, helping all the players, going round and speaking to them.

"It's good for the new lads to see someone of his status and get words of advice from him. I speak to Sir Bobby quite a lot. He's a hero and a legend for both club and country. He gives me loads of advice, but we've not spoken about his records."

England take on San Marino in their Euro 2016 qualifying clash later today.
