Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says that "anything can happen" in the Champions League as the Red Devils prepare to return to the competition.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho claimed that "anything can happen" in the Champions League when questioned on his team's ambitions in the competition this season.

United have not played Champions League football in two of the last three seasons, but success in the Europa League last term means that the Red Devils will advance directly into the group stage of the 2017-18 campaign.

Mourinho has said that United "are one of the top three football clubs in the world", and while remaining realistic over his team's ambitions, the Portuguese insists that the field is open.

"We are new to the competition. It's absolutely true that Manchester United are one of the top three football clubs in the world, no doubt about it, but the football club is one thing and the team's credentials going into a competition are another thing entirely," Mourinho told UEFA.com.

"If we manage that, we'll try to finish in the top two. Then, when you are in the Champions League last-16 draw, anything can happen."

United will attempt to land more European silverware when they face Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup in Macedonia on Tuesday night.
