Ilkay Gundogan is open to a return to FC Nuremberg at some point in the future, with his current Manchester City contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has indicated that he is open to returning to his former club Nuremberg.

Gundogan's future as a Man City player appears to be uncertain, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.

While the Germany international is yet to agree a new contract, he has been linked with a free transfer to Barcelona, who were interested in signing him in the most recent transfer window.

However, Nuremberg have expressed a desire to sign Gundogan after the club's sporting director, Dieter Hecking, publicly asked for the 32-year-old to return to the side that he played for between 2009 and 2011.

In response, Gundogan told Bild's Phrasenmaher podcast: "To be honest, it will still be a bit difficult next year, but I can definitely imagine returning to FC Nürnberg one day - in whatever capacity. I associate the club and the city with incredibly great people and moments."

Gundogan, who has also attracted interest from Galatasaray, Juventus and Bayern Munich, is currently preparing for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.

Germany begin their World Cup campaign against Japan on Wednesday before they face Spain and Costa Rica to wrap up the group stage.
