Cardiff City complete the signing of a 21-year-old midfielder from Manchester City for an undisclosed fee.

Cardiff City have completed the signing of midfielder Alex Robertson from Manchester City for an undisclosed fee, subject to international clearance.

The 21-year-old had been on the books at Man City since 2017, but he was unable to break into Pep Guardiola's senior team and spent the last two seasons on loan at Ross County and Portsmouth.

Robertson impressed for last season's League One champions Portsmouth, making 27 first-team appearances, and he is now looking forward to making the step up in the Championship with Cardiff.

The two-cap Australia international has put pen to paper on a four-year contract with the Bluebirds and becomes their fifth signing of the summer after Calum Chambers, Anwar El Ghazi, Chris Willock and Wilfried Kanga.

Robertson already has a connection with Cardiff as his uncle is former Bluebird midfielder Gavin Rae, who spent four-years with the Welsh club between 2007 and 2011.

"[Rae] told me a lot of good things about the city and the club," Robertson told Cardiff's official website after signing his contract at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Robertson "buzzing" after finalising Cardiff move

"Going forward in my career now, this feels like the right place to be. I'm buzzing. It's been a few weeks coming. I'm so glad it is over the line.

"City have built a great squad for the upcoming season now and I want to be a part of that. The Gaffer told me the way he likes to play and what he expects from his players.

"I feel I can learn a lot from him and the more senior players in our squad. I'm ready to go. I've got stronger over the last few months."

Cardiff head coach Erol Bulut added: "We're delighted Alex is here. There were six other clubs that were in for him, which shows what a talent he is.

"We had a meeting 10 days ago and explained our goals for the club and for Alex. Our hopes and plans were aligned.

"Alex can deliver a lot. He's got quality. He's technically very good with a great work rate and can add to what we already have. We now have a great mix of youth and experience in the midfield."

Man City are allegedly set to earn up to £3m from the sale of Robertson, who is the latest Citizens youngster to leave the club on a permanent basis this summer after Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Tommy Doyle, Liam Delap, Lewis Fiorini and Yan Couto.

Robertson will be hoping to make an immediate impression under Bulut and could make his debut for Cardiff when they play host to Sunderland in their opening Championship match of the new season on Saturday.
