Pep Guardiola is to answer a UEFA charge of improper conduct after being sent to the stands during the second leg of Manchester City's quarter-final tie versus Liverpool.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has been charged with improper conduct by UEFA after being sent to the stands in the Champions League defeat to Liverpool.

The Catalan coach was dismissed at the end of the opening 45 minutes for confronting referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz, whom he later described as "special".

Guardiola was unhappy with the official's decision to rule out a legitimate second goal for his side, as Leroy Sane was adjudged to have scored from an offside position, despite the ball coming off opposition midfielder James Milner before he prodded home.

UEFA has confirmed that the 47-year-old must now respond to an improper conduct charge, with the case scheduled to be heard on May 31.

City lost the quarter-final second leg 2-1 on the night to crash out 5-1 on aggregate.
