Malaga banned from European competition

UEFA ban Malaga from all European club competitions for one upcoming season due to financial problems.

Malaga have been banned from all European club competitions for one upcoming season having failed to pay players' wages and tax bills on time.

The ban, handed out by European football's governing body UEFA, will be enforced if the Spaniards qualify for Europe in any season between 2012-13 and 2016-17.

Malaga, who have also been fined almost £300,000, are experiencing well-documented financial problems despite recent investment from a Qatari-based owner.

The club will be banned for a further season if they fail to prove that their outstanding debts have been settled by March 31 next year.

Malaga are currently enjoying their first season of Champion League football, winning their group to set up a tie with Porto in the first knockout stage.

Hadjuk Split, NK Osijek, Rapid Bucharest, Dinamo Bucharest, FK Partizan, FK Vojvodina and Arsenal Kiev have also been punished by UEFA, while the case against Lech Poznan was dropped.
