Claudio Sulser: 'Luis Suarez knew of disciplinary risks'

Claudio Sulser, FIFA's disciplinary chief, defends his decision to ban Luis Suarez from all football-related activity for four months.

FIFA's disciplinary chief has defended his decision to ban Luis Suarez from all football-related activity for four months.

The Uruguayan's ban for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini means that he cannot play for a club until the end of October, which has drawn criticism from Liverpool officials.

However, the head of FIFA's disciplinary committee, Claudio Sulser, said that an all-encompassing ban was the "risk" the player took.

Asked why the committee imposed a ban that affected Liverpool, Sulser told PA: "That's your opinion. It's a sanction against the player. That is the risk if you are a player and you are sanctioned at the World Cup.

"I agree with you it's a problem for Liverpool, but the sanction is in the disciplinary regulations."

The Uruguay Football Association have formally submitted an appeal to FIFA against the ban.
