Manchester City have reportedly stepped up their interest in Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk by making him their top January transfer target.
The Netherlands international also remains on Liverpool's radar, having seen a big-money move to Anfield collapse during the summer due to an alleged illegal approach.
City recently emerged as contenders to land Van Dijk from Southampton, as they are desperate for some defensive cover following injuries to John Stones and Vincent Kompany.
According to Goal.com, the 26-year-old is a priority signing for Pep Guardiola, while Real Sociedad ace Inigo Martinez will be targeted if an agreement cannot be reached with the Saints.
Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi are the only other recognised options for City, who have an 11-point lead at the top of the Premier League table and the joint-best defensive record.
