Steve McManaman backs Liverpool to win Premier League, Champions League double

Former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman insists that there is no reason why Jurgen Klopp's side cannot win both the Premier League and Champions League titles this season.

Former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman has claimed that there is no reason why the club cannot win both the Premier League and the Champions League this season.

The Reds remain in the hunt for silverware on two fronts heading into the closing stages of the season, having booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and opened up a two-point lead at the top of the Premier League - albeit having played a game more than Manchester City.

Liverpool also received a kind quarter-final draw against Porto in Europe to raise hopes of reaching a second successive final, while domestically they are enjoying their best-ever season as they bid to end a 29-year wait for the title.

Champions Man City still have the destiny of the Premier League trophy in their own hands, but McManaman believes that the talk over a potential quadruple for Pep Guardiola's side should encourage Liverpool that a double is feasible.

"I don't see why [Liverpool can't win both the Premier League and the Champions League]. Everyone is talking about City winning the quadruple so why can't Liverpool win the double?" McManaman told Sports Mole.

"Barcelona look like they're going to win their league - they're still in it, Juventus are going to walk away with their league and they're still in it, so there is a good chance that someone is going to do the double and it might as well be Liverpool."

Liverpool have only achieved the league and European cup double twice before in their illustrious history - in 1977 and 1984.
