Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum says that he once held discussions with Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino regarding a potential switch to North London.

Georginio Wijnaldum has revealed that he held talks with Tottenham Hotspur before opting to join Liverpool in 2016.

The midfielder netted 11 goals from 38 outings during his first season in the Premier League, and Newcastle United's relegation led to the Magpies cashing in on the Dutchman.

The 27-year-old has enjoyed a successful two years at Anfield, but the player has suggested that his career could have taken a different path.

Wijnaldum told The Telegraph: "I met [Mauricio] Pochettino when I left Newcastle. I just felt Liverpool wanted to come to an agreement quickly.

"Tottenham have shown over the years the quality of their players and manager. I see Tottenham as a team like us, wanting to play good football. They are always looking for solutions in the game and play as we do."

Liverpool are looking to register their fifth successive win of the new campaign when facing Spurs at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.
