Wigan chairman Dave Whelan says that he was "misinterpreted" when claiming that Roberto Martinez was Liverpool's first choice as new manager.

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has responded to Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre by claiming that his initial comments regarding Roberto Martinez's chances of obtaining the Reds job were "misinterpreted".

Ayre stated today that the Latics chief was wrong to claim that Martinez was the number one choice to replace Kenny Dalglish on the day that Brendan Rodgers was appointed.

"I cannot help it if some people misinterpreted what I said, which was that Liverpool wanted our manager - which they did as they asked permission to speak with him, and talked to him on a number of occasions," Whelan told ESPN.

"My response is a simple one - I wish Liverpool all the very, very best with their new manager. They have appointed a super lad for the job, a very good manager, and I am very happy for them. We've kept Roberto Martinez, so I wish them luck for next season."

Rodgers moved from Swansea City to Anfield on a three-year deal.
