Fernando Torres: 'Liverpool fans are different class'

Fernando Torres reveals his shock at hearing Liverpool fans cheer for him in Sunday's All-Star charity match at Anfield.

Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres has admitted that he was shocked to hear Liverpool supporters cheer his name as he appeared in a charity match at Anfield on Sunday, before hailing the club's fans as "different class".

The Spaniard, who left Anfield in acrimonious circumstances when he joined rivals Chelsea for a then British record fee of £50m in January 2011, was part of Steven Gerrard's team that played out a 2-2 draw with Jamie Carragher's side.

Torres appeared as a second-half substitute to partner Luis Suarez up front, and the Atleti man revealed his surprise at hearing his personalised song sung on the Kop during the game.

He told the club's official TV station: "It was just very emotional. I didn't know how to react because I was not expecting them to sing the song which I still remember. I remember the great games we had here in the Champions League and trying to win the league and fighting for trophies.

"I have this song in my head and it was so important for me. Those three-and-a-half years changed my entire life and I remember every important moment there was always that song from the Kop. So to hear that once again is something I will never forget.

"Everybody knows Liverpool fans are different class and for me today it is one of those things you can only dream about. It is just amazing to be able to be here and I just want to thank everybody for the welcome."

Torres joined Atleti on loan from AC Milan in January after he made a free transfer to Italy from Chelsea.
