Phil Thompson: 'Liverpool hopes of Champions League are over'

Phil Thompson believes that Liverpool will not qualify for the Champions League after losing 1-0 to Hull City.

Phil Thompson has claimed that Liverpool's hopes of Champions League qualification are all but over following their defeat to Hull City.

The Reds were beaten 1-0 at the KC Stadium last night to leave them seven points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester United with four games left to play.

Thompson believes that Brendan Rodgers's side had to leave Hull with a victory if they wanted to put themselves in contention for a top-four finish.

"Liverpool had to win all of their games between now and the end of the season to have a realistic chance," the former defender told Sky Sports News.

"We had to beat Hull at a place that had been a graveyard for us last season, our worst performance when we got beaten 3-1, and this wasn't much better. Hull were nervous. This was a game we had to start quickly and brightly but we never got started. It was the same against West Brom at the weekend."

Liverpool have the opportunity to get back to winning ways on Saturday when they host Queens Park Rangers in the Premier League.
