Brendan Rodgers has labelled Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Southampton this evening as a "huge result" in their battle for a top-four finish.
Goals from Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling helped the Reds on their way to an impressive triumph at St Mary's to close the gap on fourth-placed Manchester United to just two points.
Liverpool have hit a rich vein of form in recent times, going 10 games unbeaten in the Premier League and looking good value to progress into the last 16 of the Europa League following their 1-0 win over Besiktas last Thursday.
"It was a game we wanted a positive result from," Rodgers told Sky Sports News. "Through winning it we would go three points behind third place, it would be a huge result and it was.
"We controlled the game as it went on. Our passing could have been better but the conditions were bad. To come here after a European game and get a win, it's a great result from the players. To come here and keep a clean sheet is a great effort."
Next up in the league for Liverpool is a meeting with Manchester City at Anfield.
