Sadio Mane "surprised" by red card punishment in Manchester City defeat

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane says that he was "shocked" by referee Jon Moss's decision to send him off against Manchester City, but is now keen to move on.

Sadio Mane has confessed that he was left "surprised" by the red card shown to him for a high foot on Ederson during Liverpool's heavy defeat to Manchester City.

The big talking point of the weekend in the Premier League arrived at the Etihad Stadium, where the Senegal international was dismissed after catching Ederson in the face with his boot 37 minutes into the match.

Liverpool had hoped to reduce the length of Mane's suspension from three games to one, but the Football Association upheld the original decision and he will now miss the meeting with Burnley, as well as a league and EFL Cup double-header against Leicester City.

Asked whether he felt referee Jon Moss made the correct call, the 25-year-old told reporters: "Honestly, I was focusing more on the goalkeeper than the card and when I saw the red card I was surprised because I was expecting a yellow card.

"But I'll accept it and try to forget it. I was going for the ball and I didn't have the intention to hurt him because I'm not that kind of player. I wish him a quick recovery. It's not easy for me because I love to play football and I enjoy helping my team to win games."

Mane featured in Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Sevilla in the Champions League on Wednesday night, while Ederson also played a full part as City cruised to a 4-0 win over Feyenoord.
