Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre believes that the IPCC's decision to investigate the possibility of bringing criminal charges on those at fault during the Hillsborough disaster is a 'significant step to justice'.

Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre has described the Independent Police Complaints Commissions' investigation into potential criminal charges against those to blame for the Hillsborough disaster as a "significant step".

The IPCC announced today that they plan to take on the largest inquiry into police actions that the country has ever seen.

The Independent Hillsborough Panel found that 116 statements from the West Yorkshire Police were changed to place blame onto supporters following the death of 96 Liverpool fans during an FA Cup semi-final between the Reds and Nottingham Forest 23 years ago.

"We welcome today's announcement by the Independent Police Complaints Commission and Director of Public Prosecutions," Ayre told the club's official website.

"This is another significant step forward in the campaign for justice for Hillsborough families and survivors. We will follow the progress of this investigation and remain resolute in our support of the families and survivors as they continue with their battle to bring those responsible for the tragedy to justice."

The panel's report was published last month.
