Jurgen Klopp: 'I can't promise Champions League football for Liverpool'

Jurgen Klopp says that he cannot "promise" to bring Champions League football back to Liverpool this season following Saturday's 4-1 win over Manchester City.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has tried to calm expectations surrounding the club by claiming that he cannot "promise" to bring Champions League football back to Anfield.

The German coach, who replaced Brendan Rodgers last month, has impressed on Merseyside as in eight games in charge he has recorded four victories, three draws and one defeat.

Two of those wins were against Chelsea and Manchester City, who were stunned as the Reds earned a 4-1 triumph at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Following the result, talk of Liverpool claiming a Champions League spot has resurfaced as the club are currently six points behind fourth-placed Arsenal.

However, Klopp, who previously said that he cannot perform 'miracles', is not making any predictions at this stage of the season.

"We have to be very careful," Klopp told reporters. "If something serious happens [to my players] then we have a big problem. We have to work, that's all.

"Somebody asks us if we can go to the top then it's not my problem. I don't think that way. The money is in the Champions League but I can't promise it now. It's hard work.

"They changed the manager here. It wasn't because of the weather and it wasn't a problem with Brendan Rodgers because he is a brilliant manager, but they had to change something. Only two weeks ago we lost to [Crystal] Palace. I can't say that we are good enough but if you want to write it you can."

This week, Liverpool face home games against Bordeaux in the Europa League and Swansea City in the league.
