Steven Gerrard: Penalties are "proper nerve-wracking"

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard describes taking penalties as "proper nerve-wracking".

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has described the penalty-taking process as "proper nerve-wracking".

The Reds skipper is the club's designated spot-kick taker and has scored 47 times from 55 attempts, marking him out as the Anfield record-holder from 12 yards.

In a promotional video for his boot manufacturers Adidas, Gerrard said: "It's difficult to describe in a shootout situation, it's proper nerve-wracking. Your penalty might be the penalty that you need to win a trophy or progress to a final.

"I think you have to give the players who have the bottle and the bravery to step up and put themselves in that position credit.

"You can't really blame a penalty taker for missing. I've played with a lot of players who wouldn't go up there and don't like going up there."

Gerrard returned to action from a six-week injury layoff on Monday as Brendan Rodgers's side won 1-0 against Swansea City.
