Paris Saint-Germain right-back Dani Alves reveals that he was on the verge of joining Liverpool in 2006 before he eventually signed for Spanish giants Barcelona.

Paris Saint-Germain right-back Dani Alves has revealed that he was on the verge of signing for Liverpool in 2006 before he went on to join Spanish giants Barcelona.

The 34-year-old, who has won three Champions League titles, six La Liga crowns and one Serie A, was priced at £9m in 2006 by Sevilla when he had "an agreement" with the Reds.

Alves eventually signed for Barcelona in 2008, where the Brazilian added to his trophy haul.

"I pretty much had an agreement with Liverpool [in 2006]," Alves told FourFourTwo. "But for whatever reason it didn't happen at the last moment and I really don't know why, I wasn't the one conducting the negotiations.

"I wanted to win things that I unfortunately couldn't win if I stayed at Sevilla. We came close, but I don't like to be just close."

Liverpool, who play Maribor at Anfield in the Champions League on Wednesday night, instead signed Jermaine Pennant and Alvaro Arbeloa.
