Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish plays down the significance of finishing above or below Everton this season.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has dismissed suggestions that his team should be extra motivated by the prospect of finishing above Everton.

Ahead of their final game of the season at Swansea City, the Reds sit a point behind their Merseyside rivals, who host Newcastle United.

While Dalglish is determined to finish as high as possible, he has played down the significance of placing above the Toffees.

He said: "We've got a desire to go there and win and, as we've said before, we want to do as well as we possibly can in every game we play.

"We're not happy finishing below anybody in the table. We want to be finishing above everybody.

"Whoever is in our road, it is up to us to be better than they are and get there when we can - but it's not been too bad [a season] for us."

Everton have not finished above Liverpool in the Premier League since 2005 - the year in which the Reds won their fifth European Cup.
