Brendan Rodgers tells Liverpool: 'Win FA Cup for Steven Gerrard'

Brendan Rodgers hopes that Liverpool can win the FA Cup this season and give long-serving captain Steven Gerrard a "wonderful send-off".

Brendan Rodgers has told his Liverpool team to bookend Steven Gerrard's illustrious spell at Anfield by helping him win the FA Cup this season.

Captain Gerrard netted twice as the Reds moved into the fourth round of the competition with a hard-fought 2-1 win away to AFC Wimbledon on Monday.

The iconic midfielder, 34, recently announced that he would be ending his 26-year spell at the club at the end of the season, and Rodgers says that only one ending will do.

"Well the FA Cup final is on his birthday, so there would be no better way for us to mark it - that would be a wonderful send-off for him," he told Sky Sports News.

"Okay, he might be getting a bit older but he'll always have that world-class ability and world-class talent.

"There are a lot of games to play but we've targeted a cup victory this season, so we're still very much in line for that moving into the second part of the season. So the idea is to get a cup run, and if we can do it that would be really special of course."

The veteran, who revealed that he is MLS-bound, has led the club to seven major honours - including their famous Champions League win over AC Milan in 2005.
