Jamie Vardy: "It has just been a brilliant week"

Jamie Vardy is 'still in shock' after being called up to Roy Hodgson's England set-up.

Jamie Vardy has said that it has been "a brilliant week" after Leicester City ensured Premier League survival and he received a call-up to the England squad.

Roy Hodgson called up the uncapped Vardy, as well as Charlie Austin and Tom Heaton, to his 24-man squad for next month's friendly against the Republic of Ireland and a Euro 2016 qualifier against Slovenia.

"I can't believe what a week it has been," Vardy told BBC Sport. "It came as a shock that I got the call-up. I can't tell you what it feels like. I'm still letting it settle in.

"It has just been a brilliant week, what with knowing our Premier League place was safe as well."

Leicester manager Nigel Pearson added, "Being called up regardless of whatever anyone else says is a reflection on of his development as a player and of the sort of team he has played in.

"If you are going to break in to the England side you need to be playing exceptionally well, but also your teammates to be playing well as well."

The striker, who was playing non-league football just a few seasons ago, has netted five goals in 34 league appearances this season, including one in the 5-1 thrashing of Queens Park Rangers earlier today.
