Serie A giants Juventus reportedly withdrew from the race to sign Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer due to financial reasons.

The 22-year-old became a free agent in July, when his contract with AC Milan expired, and he decided to joined Ligue 1 outfit Paris Saint-Germain, signing a five-year deal.

According to Goal, Juventus were in pole position to sign Donnarumma this summer, however after the club announced a club-record loss of £180m (€210m) for the 2020-21 season earlier this year, they decided against the move.

Juve's director of football Federico Cherubini stated earlier this month that the club already have an established number one in Wojciech Szczesny, and explained why the addition of Donnarumma was not possible.

"We already have a goalkeeper [Szczesny] with a long-term contract (until 2024) that we still believe in. Because of the decisions that we're making [to balance the books], it wouldn't have made sense to do what PSG have done [with Donnarumma's deal]," Cherubini told Tuttosport.

"It would not have been an opportune time to create a situation where we have two great goalkeepers in the same squad."

Szczesny has now failed to keep a clean sheet in any of his last 15 Serie A matches.
