Reinhard Grindel: 'Joachim Low's job is safe'

DFB president Reinhard Grindel insists that Joachim Low will remain Germany boss even if the world champions exit the 2018 World Cup in the group stages.

The president of the German Football Association, Reinhard Grindel, has insisted that Joachim Low will remain in charge of Germany even if the world champions exit the 2018 World Cup in the group stages.

Germany enter their final Group F match against South Korea on Wednesday afternoon knowing that they need to better Sweden's result against Mexico in order to book their spot in the last-16 stage of the competition.

Die Mannschaft have not failed to progress past the group stage of a World Cup since 1938, but Grindel has played down suggestions that Low could lose his job as head coach if the 2014 champions bow out.

"We decided in the DFB executive committee before the World Cup to offer a contract extension," Grindel said in a statement.

"We believe there will be a transition that will take place after the World Cup, regardless of the outcome of the tournament, and no one is better equipped to handle that than Jogi Low.

"He proved a year ago at the Confederations Cup that he can make young players into an impressive team who play outstanding football. That is still valid, as far as we are concerned."

Last month, Low, who has won 108 of his 164 matches in charge of the national team, extended his contract with Germany until 2022.
