Jamie Carragher: 'FA Cup replays should be scrapped'

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has called for FA Cup replays to be scrapped.

The ex-Reds defender, who ran out 737 times for the club, believes that the added fixtures are an inconvenience and pointed towards the dwindling attendance figures as a reason for abolishing the replays.

Carragher told the Daily Mail: "Some of the replays, like West Ham against Everton and Spurs versus Burnley, made for terrific viewing but it is time for them to be abolished.

"They are now an inconvenience and scrapping them will put the shine back on the FA Cup. In the last decade, replays have been poorly attended.

"They get in the way of other commitments and I'm not just talking about teams in the Barclays Premier League. There are 46 games for Football League teams and it's a headache squeezing in replays. And what about the expense for fans?"

Carragher won the FA Cup twice as a player in 2001 and 2006.
