Everton boss David Moyes reveals that, despite his attempts to keep the player, Eric Dier will return to Sporting Lisbon ahead of next season.

Sporting Lisbon defender Eric Dier will not be extending his stay with Everton.

The 18-year-old Cheltenham-born centre-back, who moved to Portugal at the age of six, had been on loan at Goodison Park since January 2011.

However, after failing to make a single first-team appearance for the Toffees, Dier will now return to Lisbon.

Everton boss David Moyes told O Jogo: "We wanted him to stay with us. We knew he wanted to be in the first team, even though there would be little chance.

"Maybe [coach Ricardo] Sa Pinto and Sporting have other plans for him."

Dier has represented England at Under-19 level.
