James McCarthy: 'Everton must start competing'

Everton midfielder James McCarthy feels that he could lose some of his red-hot teammates unless the Toffees compete for trophies.

James McCarthy has called on his Everton teammates to begin fulfilling their promise of winning trophies in an effort to keep the team intact.

With the likes of John Stones, Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku impressing this season, McCarthy feels that it is an exciting time for the Toffees, but warns that their talent will be prised away unless the players are given a reason to stay at Goodison Park.

"That's it, we do need to; there are things we've spoken about, we want to achieve things together," the Republic of Ireland midfielder told The Mirror.

"The history of Everton; it's a massive club, in the past there have been lots of trophies, and this season we want to try and focus on achieving things again.

"We haven't won a trophy for many a year, and the squad here we definitely know we have got a good enough squad, so it's about getting it right on the pitch so we can kick on."

The Merseysiders, whose last trophy was the FA Cup in 1995, reportedly rejected up to four bids from Chelsea for 21-year-old defender Stones, with the largest of which thought to be £38m.

Roberto Martinez's side, who welcome Manchester United to Goodison on Saturday, sit seventh in the Premier League table.
