Dermot Gallagher: 'Everton's Phil Jagielka deserved red card versus Wolves'

Gallagher: 'Jagielka deserved red card'

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher says that Everton defender Phil Jagielka deserved a straight red card in Saturday's top-flight fixture with Wolves.

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has said that Everton defender Phil Jagielka was sent off deservedly in the top-flight fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday evening.

The Toffees held a 1-0 lead at Molineux but towards the end of the first half, Jagielka failed to control a pass on the edge of his own penalty area before fouling Diogo Jota.

Jagielka was quickly shown a red card for preventing a goalscoring opportunity by connecting with Jota with his studs, although there was an argument that Jagielka also made contact with the ball.

However, Gallagher insists that official Craig Pawson had made the correct decision in dismissing the former England international at Molineux.

Gallagher told Sky Sports News: "I thought it was a red card. This is what you teach young referees. He has over-run the ball, he wants to get it back quickly.

"He's not nasty - I don't think he means to make contact with the player - but because he lunges, he has made contact with the far ankle."

Wolves fought back to claim a 2-2 draw in the West Midlands.
